DR NISHA NADKARNI (Surgical Pathologist and Retired Professor & Head of the Department of Pathology, Goa Medical College )
DR SUNIL NADKARNI (Consultant General Surgeon and Founder Director Mandovi Clinic & Hospital and Radiance Diagnostics)
This dual-career-oriented couple find their happiness in maintaining a healthy boundary between their demanding profession and personal life. They are fans of each other as well as pillars of strength for one other. Having simple, kind, loving and caring natures is what makes
Dr Nisha and Dr Sunil’s bond stronger.
What was your first impression of each other?
Dr Nisha: Intelligent, smart and most handsome man in the world! I still remember his response in our college days in GMC, when during an interview with the Dean he was asked as to why he selected the medical profession, he was the only student to say that he wants to serve the people of Goa and moreover be his own boss. All the faculty and Dean (including me) were impressed with his leadership attitude towards life at such tender age.
Dr Sunil: Beauty with brains in the truest sense – a scholar, a topper in college and a very humble person.
What qualities do you admire in each other?
Dr Nisha:
•Leadership qualities.
•He is empathetic and makes each patient feel cared for.
•His constant efforts to improvise other’s lives not only within his professional limit but also outside it, thereby creating a positive impact in society at large.
•Kind-hearted and the most loved one among patients, friends and family members.
Dr Sunil: She can multitask and balance her professional and family life perfectly. She is extremely helpful to one and all. Very hardworking and confident in whatever job she does. Leads by example.
How has your partner contributed to your professional growth?
Dr Nisha: He encouraged me and insisted I complete my masters after marriage while I had two children at home to care for. Post-graduation courses had just started in GMC and it wouldn’t have been possible to pursue my career if it was not for his support.
Dr Sunil: Her all-positive approach towards my goals in life is an important factor. It is said that ambitious people attract ambitious people and it’s this chemistry between us that has helped us grow together all these years, may it be in professional or in personal life.
How have you influenced each other’s way of living and thinking?
Dr Nisha: We have supported each other during good and tough times. We have respected each other’s opinion and always taken decisions together.
Dr Sunil: She is my biggest admirer and a staunch critic too. Improvising yourself by accepting constructive criticism is what I learn from her even today. It’s said the only way to influence a person is to talk about what he wants and show him how to get it. Her confident and firm decisions during dicey situations make impossible things possible.
How do you divide responsibilities with respect to families?
Dr Nisha: Since both of us are practising doctors, we have always lived and will live a life as a team, sharing responsibilities and tasks among ourselves in a way that honours both of us. We have made sure that our children have got all the attention, family time, support, love and care despite our busy schedule.
Dr Sunil: She is my boss at home and I am hers in the hospital. We prioritise balance between work and family. She never allows my absence to be felt at home while I am at work and I see that she gets everything that she needs to play the role of a mother to three daughters and a doctor to thousands of patients.
