Goa’s gorgeous fields and quiet hamlets are often home to overlooked hero stones depicting stories of bravery from the past.
An average person might have never heard of a hero stone, let alone seen one. Cultural travelers will have seen these in museums. But to spot a hero stone on a casual sojourn in the countryside is rare.
Well, the history of Goa records many battles as this fertile territory passed from one dynasty to another. These threw up some real heroes, men who fought bravely and even sacrificed their lives while performing their duty. Besides wars, the villages of Goa were subject to raids by gangs who sought to snatch cattle – a prized possession in those days. The village men warded off these attacks by fighting and sometimes paying the ultimate price of laying down their lives.
