Approaching sustainable development with a focus on value creation and energy-efficient solutions is an integral part of Vedanta Sesa Goa’s responsible business operations
Sustainability has become a critical consideration for businesses across sectors. No business can operate without an impactful Environment Social and Governance (ESG) strategy.
At Vedanta Sesa Goa, the principles of ESG have been approached from a fresh perspective, harnessing a multi- capital approach to value creation with best practices across Economic, Environment, Social, and Governance (EESG) priorities that include the adoption of the best sustainability practices within operations and the supply chain and equipping and motivating local communities to switch to the more sustainable and eco-friendly practices. This approach recognises that sustainability is not an optional add-on but an integral part of the responsible business operations at Sesa Goa.
The economic aspect of EESG includes factors such as revenue generation, cost management, innovation, supply chain management, and economic contributions to the local and national economy. Without these aspects in focus, sustainability cannot be comprehensive and the ESG initiatives will not achieve their intended potential.
Vedanta Sesa Goa’s dedication to sustainability is exemplified by its early proactive adoption of the best practices in the systematic reclamation of mine sites since the 1980s.
The company’s unique model of environmental conservation efforts included biodiversity conservation with visionary community development initiatives such as Sesa Technical School and Sesa Football Academy, setting new standards for sustainable mine closures.
During the mine and waste dump reclamation process, Vedanta Sesa Goa has undertaken extensive afforestation by planting numerous native species while adopting various scientific methods. Over 750,000 saplings have been planted at the Sanquelim iron ore mine alone, with technical and scientific support fromesteemed research institutes such as Goa University.
In addition to afforestation, Vedanta Sesa Goa has transformed a significant portion of the mine pits into water bodies by harvesting rainwater. Seeking to maximise the value of these water bodies, the company collaborated with the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) to explore the cultivation of freshwater fish in rainwater-filled pits. The pisciculture project has been successful, resulting in an abundance of freshwater species within the pit.
