In sports, triumph is rarely linear. Behind every podium victory, there’s a journey of setback, self-doubt and moments that test a sportsperson’s resolve. Some of the greats like boxer Mary Kom, badminton player PV Sindhu and athlete PT Usha have faced their
share of setbacks but we remember them for their grit, for their victory, for their comeback. The comeback is always stronger, and for young shooting star, Manu Bhaker, her story is no different.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 24-year-old shooter suffered a pistol malfunction when the cocking lever on her air pistol broke, costing her valuable time, focus and a shot at an Olympic medal. While she regained her composure after the damaged piece was replaced, it disrupted her rhythm as she raced against time to complete her shots, ultimately falling short by two points to qualify for the 10-metre air pistol final.
Following the disappointing result, Bhaker faced intense public scrutiny and considered stepping away from the sport, confessing to her coach: “I don’t have any courage left.

As pressure mounted, differences with her coach led to a public fallout with the two choosing to part ways, adding to the emotional and mental strain Bhaker was already navigating. However, they eventually reconciled, putting aside their differences to rebuild focus and trust – the renewed partnership revived Bhaker’s confidence and form, while preparing her mentally and physically for high-stress events ahead.
